Accounting & finance recruitmentHire a controller in Toronto and the GTA

A controller owns the accuracy of your financial reporting and the strength of your controls. Finch recruits experienced CPA controllers who can lead a team and advise ownership.

What a controller does

A controller leads the accounting function and is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. The role typically includes overseeing month-end and year-end close, managing the accounting team, designing and maintaining internal controls, leading the audit or review engagement, managing cash flow and banking relationships, overseeing tax compliance and preparing reports for ownership or the board. In many mid-sized companies, the controller is the senior finance person and works directly with the owner or president.

A controller has a direct effect on the trust that leadership, lenders and auditors place in your numbers. The right one tightens the close, strengthens controls and gives owners clear, timely information. The wrong one can let errors or weak controls go unnoticed. Finch screens for leadership experience, technical depth under ASPE or IFRS, system implementation experience and integrity, and we confirm CPA status with CPA Ontario. References from owners, CFOs and auditors help complete the picture.

Hiring a controller: common questions

What is the difference between a controller and a CFO?

A controller focuses on accounting operations: accurate reporting, controls, the close and compliance. A CFO is usually more strategic, handling financing, investment decisions and long-term planning. In many mid-sized companies the controller covers part of both. We help you define which responsibilities matter most so the search targets the right level.

Is a CPA required for a controller?

It is not legally required for an in-house controller, but many employers expect it because the role leads financial reporting and controls. The CPA designation through CPA Ontario signals formal training and adherence to professional standards. We confirm designation status during screening and can discuss whether strong experience could offset its absence in your situation.
